Using Cultural Theory to Explain Learning and Innovation: A Focus on American Online Banks
Abstract
HR professionals everywhere are faced with the challenge of encouraging and sustaining a workplace culture which will lead to learning and innovations over the long term. However, such cultures are not easy to generate or sustain. Although past literature in HR has focused on several factors contributing to learning and innovation in firms, it has failed to give a clear action plan to managers. Also past researchers, who have explored culture as a factor contributing to innovation, have focused only on national and/or corporate levels of culture. These authors treat nations and corporations as being homogenous and thereby provide broad generalizations, which fail to convince due to numerous exceptions observed in the field. In our interdisciplinary study, we propose looking at culture and its role in sustaining innovations in a more dynamic way through the use of the Douglasian Cultural Theory
